Introduction
Manganese element widely exists in various ores, but for manganese containing ores with industrial development value, the manganese content must be at least 6%, which is collectively referred to as "a manganese ore". There are about 150 kinds of manganese containing minerals known in nature, including oxides, carbonates, silicates, sulfides, borates, tungstate, phosphates, etc., but there are few minerals with high manganese content. It can be divided into the following categories:
1. Pyrolusite: the main body is manganese dioxide, tetragonal system, and the crystal is fine columnar or acicular. It is usually a massive, powdery aggregate. Pyrolusite is a very common mineral in manganese ore and an important mineral raw material for manganese smelting.
2. Permanganite: it is the oxide of barium and manganese. The color of permanganite is from dark gray to black, with smooth surface, semi metallic luster, grape or bell emulsion block. It belongs to monoclinic system, and crystals are rare. The hardness is 4 ~ 6 and the specific gravity is 4.4 ~ 4.7.
3. Pyrolusite: pyrolusite is found in some hydrothermal deposits of endogenous origin and sedimentary manganese deposits of exogenous origin. It is one of the mineral raw materials for manganese smelting.
4. Black manganese ore: it is also known as "manganous oxide", tetragonal system. The crystal is tetragonal biconical, usually granular aggregate, with hardness of 5.5 and specific gravity of 4.84. It is also one of the mineral raw materials for manganese smelting.
5. Limonite: also known as "manganese trioxide", tetragonal system. The crystals are biconical, granular and massive aggregates.
6. Rhodochrosite: it is also known as "manganese carbonate", a cubic system. The crystals are rhombohedral, usually granular, massive or nodular. Rhodochrosite is an important mineral raw material for manganese smelting.
7.Sulfur manganese ore: it is also called "manganese sulfide", with hardness of 3.5 ~ 4, specific gravity of 3.9 ~ 4.1 and brittleness. Sulfur manganese ore occurs in a large number of sedimentary metamorphic manganese deposits, which is one of the mineral raw materials for manganese smelting.
Application area
Manganese ore is mainly used in metal smelting industry. As an important additive element in steel products, manganese is closely related to steel production. Known as "no steel without manganese", more than 90% ~ 95% of its manganese is used in the iron and steel industry.
1. In the iron and steel industry, it uses manganese to manufacture manganese containing special steel. Adding a small amount of manganese to steel can increase hardness, ductility, toughness and wear resistance.
